Nairobi, 16 June 2022 – The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM Africa) and Africa for SDGs, an initiative of the My Goals Foundation, have entered a partnership to support youth-led education and innovation for sustainable development in Africa.

Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed today in Nairobi, Kenya the two organizations will deliver transformative education and education for sustainable development (ESD) to empower young people, educators, learning institutions and communities towards sustainable development. This will be achieved through training and accelerator programmes, bootcamps and fellowships, mentorship and coaching, networking opportunities and implementation of sustainable local projects led by both parties.

To help expand the Scouts for SDGs network in Sub-Saharan Africa to promote SDGs acceleration, Africa for SDGs will provide technical support in scaling and funding awards for the Africa Scout Award to serve as a recognition system for exemplary young people contributing to the SDGs.

The cooperation will also maximize youth innovation and educational opportunities presented by the programmes, events, campaigns, and multimedia presence of both WOSM Africa and Africa for SDGs. Research and documentation to capture and disseminate the impact of the collaboration towards the achievement of SDGs will also be undertaken.

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, Dr. Joe Bonga, the Chief Executive Officer at Africa for SDGs at My Goals Foundation said that “Africa for SDGs will collaborate with Scouting in Africa to develop and implement accelerator programmes to equip young people with the competencies to become active global citizens to help them start or grow their existing local projects and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. We recognize Scouts as leaders in innovation for SDGs and are keen to work with them to ensure that no one is left behind.”

On his part, Mr. Frederic Tutu Kama-Kama, the Regional Director at WOSM Africa noted that, “This partnership aligns very well with our Scouts for SDGs initiative which is our systematic effort to leverage Scouting's unique Youth Programme model and initiatives to raise awareness and inspire action for the SDGs among young people. Scouts for SDGs is the world’s largest coordinated youth contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals and our collaboration with Africa for SDGs is a catalyst for these efforts in Sub-Saharan Africa.”

The signing of the MoU kicks-off engagements in this five-year partnership that places great importance on equipping young people with the competencies to become active global citizens and contribute to peace and sustainable development in the communities, Africa, and the world.
