Improving Food Security and Nutrition in Rwandan Households
Burera, Rwanda: 45 mothers from 45 households, 23 Scouts and 12 Unit Scout Leaders in Burera District in Northern Rwanda proudly graduated from the association's Agriculture, Health, and Nutrition training and are now nutrition champions in their own homes and communities. This is part of the activities of the food security and nutrition project being implemented with support from the Africa Scout Foundation Youth Fund.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Rwanda Scouts Association's Field Officer, Alexis congratulated the champions saying, “You have learned more about malnutrition, you know how you can prepare healthy foods from your school and kitchen gardens. I request you to continue using the skills gained from this project.”
The goal of this project is to address the different forms of malnutrition that have been affecting and causing stunted growth in children under six months from several villages in the district in the last decades. With the help of the Africa Scout Foundation Youth Fund grant, the Rwandan Scouts have managed to create model 'school' farms and 'family gardens' to teach the villagers how to sow, grow and harvest vegetables to combat malnutrition.
"In addition, the Scouts have also set up a non-formal cooking school at village level. Trained Scouts act as facilitators and help them to prepare a balanced diet, all in a spirit of collaboration and learning by doing", explains David Niragire, a young Scout who initiated the project.
The mission of the Africa Scout Foundation is to promote the growth of Scouting and support more young people in Africa to gain knowledge, develop skills and attitudes through quality educational programmes towards creating a better world by continuous accumulation of capital funds. These funds are raised through donations, grants, membership contributions and other legal methods of fundraising. The Foundation also seeks non-capital donations to support specific Scouting projects. This is with a vision of “ensuring a future for Scouting in Africa.
